Donnie Reagan Swain of Metter passed away on Monday, March 6, 2017 at University Hospital in Augusta after an extended illness.

Mrs. Swain was born November 27, 1926 in Winter Park, Florida, and spent her childhood in Waynesboro, Georgia before moving to Millen as a young teenager. She graduated from Millen High School and Georgia Teachers College (Georgia Southern). She spent over 40 years in public education, beginning her teaching career at age 19 in the Jenkins County Schools. She taught Home Economics, Social Studies and English in the Burke, Jenkins, Jefferson and Candler County systems, before retiring as a Guidance Counselor at Metter High School.

Mrs. Swain was a member of the Georgia Retired Teachers Association, the National Education Association and Candler County Retired Teachers. She was a long-time leader of Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y Clubs locally, and after her retirement, she served on the Board of the State YMCA of Georgia.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Metter for 46 years.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Aaron Swain (1995) and Harold Averitt (1948), mother, Alma Sapp Reagan Marshall, and sisters, Sara Fuller and Margaret Goodson.

Mrs. Swain is survived by her children, Dr. Robert Swain and wife, Debbie of Colorado Springs, Colorado, David Swain of Metter, Angela Swain of Houston Texas, Patti Swain McLendon and husband, Roger of Durham, North Carolina, and Julie Swain Ivey and husband, Tommy of Boca Raton, Florida; seven grandchildren, Bryan and Ben Swain, Aaron Lawrence, Patrick, Erin and Ryan McLendon, and Elizabeth Ivey; two sisters, Mary Wasden of Millen and Betty Parsons of Vidalia; and thirty-two nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 pm at First Baptist Church of Metter with burial to be held in the Millen City Cemetery. Visitation will be at the First Baptist Church on Thursday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Pallbearers will be her sisters' sons: Allen Goodson, Ed Fuller, Hal Parsons,  Bill and Charlie Wasden and Great nephew Steve Morgan

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be made to the Metter First Baptist Church or to the State YMCA of Georgia ( PO Box 3789, Cartersville, GA 30120) .
