Mrs. Joyce Elizabeth Steele of Metter passed away on Wednesday July 30, 2025, at Azalea Nursing Home in Metter, Ga. Joyce was born on March 29, 1936, at home in Collins Ga. to the late Walter and Velma Cannon. Joyce was predeceased by both her first husband, Henry Wilton Driggers, and her current husband James (Jimmy) Steele, as well as a sister, Sarah Cannon, two brothers Lenwood Cannon and Julian Cannon, a son, Karon Driggers, and a great-granddaughter, Maeleigh Driggers.

Joyce was primarily a homemaker but did take in ironing when her children were young and later worked at a local drugstore and a couple of convenience stores during her life in Metter. She also babysat for many years. She, in her words, helped raise half of Metter. Friends of her children and grandchildren were always welcomed to hang out, and some even moved in for a time, at her home. Even when her age disallowed being the primary caregiver for young ones, she helped her daughter Sheila with the children in her daycare, taking great joy in being called Grandma as they crawled up into her lap.

Joyce was very talented at crocheting and many of her children and grandchildren, as well as countless others in Metter have owned some of her projects.  She could whip out a sweater and booties in a single afternoon with quality that would rival any storebought items.  She continued to crochet right up till her last days.

Joyce was quick with a laugh and brought joy to most that knew her. She was a strong daughter, sister, momma, grand- and great-grandmother and will be immeasurably missed.

Joyce is survived by two sons, Lawrence (Margaret) Driggers of Portal, Bronson (Deborah) Steele of Metter, three daughters, Brenda (Kim) McElveen of Cobbtown, Sheila (Gary) Sutton of Metter, and Nona Steele of Metter, one Brother Harry (Doris) Cannon of Claxton. Joyce has 13 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and even a few great-great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Sunday August 03, 2025, at the Funeral Home, from 4-6 pm. The funeral will be conducted in the Chapel of Wood Funeral Home, Monday August 04, 2025 at 11 am. Burial will be at Lake Church Cemetery ……

Pallbearers will be Jason Sutton, Brian Sutton Chase Sutton, Eric Armstrong, Caden Colquitt, and Ashton Steele

Honorary pallbearers are great-grandsons Lane Sutton, Jaleen Colquitt, Levi Sutton, Hunter Sutton, Jaxon Sutton, Brandon Steele, Zayden Sutton, Garrison Sutton and Cameron Turner.
