October 12, 1933 – August 26, 2024
Mrs. Octavia Lanier Smith, 90 of Metter, passed peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus on Monday, August 26, 2024, at Candler County Hospital, with her loved ones at her bedside.
Octavia was devoted to her family and enjoyed both flower and vegetable gardening. She worked many years at American Argo. She was a lifelong member of Evergreen Baptist Church which she joined in 1950, obtaining the title of Matriarch (oldest living member) teaching Sunday school for several years. Ms. Octavia was a devout Christian and sincerely loved her family.
Octavia, affectionately known as Tave, was one of 11 children born to Beulah Thrift Lanier and Grady Lanier of the Evergreen community. She was born at her parents' home in Candler County on October 12, 1933. A local midwife delivered her. After completing the lower grades at Central School, she attended and graduated Metter High School in 1952. Octavia married Tom Carlton Smith of Tattnall County. They had one son, Tommy C. Smith Sr in 1956. Subsequent to Carlton's death in 1990, she later married Charles Eugene Smith. Tave is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husbands and her son. She is survived by grandsons Tommy Smith (Crystal) and Timmy Smith (Roxi), and great-grandchildren: Amilya, Alexia, Trey, Madison, Vanna, Jonathan and Tallulah. The grandsons and their wives have been devoted and loving caregivers for Tave in her last years.
The family will receive friends on Thursday morning (August 29, 2024), beginning at 10 am., at Evergreen Baptist Church, with the funeral to follow at 11am., with Rev. Allen McCoy officiating.
Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
