(Steele) Goodwin

Shirley S. Bird Goodwin passed away on June 6, 2026, at Jenkins County Medical Center.
She was born on February 29, 1940, in Darien, Georgia, to the late Robert James Steele and Helen Rotha Barnard Steele. Shirley was a proud graduate of Metter High School, Class of 1959.
In 1963, she married the late William Madison Bird Jr., the father of her children, and they remained together until his passing on January 17, 1989. She later married Gerald Goodwin in 1991, and they remained together in Wisconsin until 2019, when she returned to Georgia due to health reasons.
Shirley will be remembered for her strong work ethic and the way she lived her life—with faith, love, strength, and kindness. She had a deep love for animals and enjoyed riding her motorcycle. Her warm spirit and wonderful sense of humor brought joy to those around her. Her character, resilience, and compassion left a lasting impression on all who knew and loved her.
Her memory will be cherished by her family, friends, and all whose lives she has touched.
She is survived by her children, Barbara Diane "Dee" Bird, William Madison Bird III (Tonya), and Matthew Noah Bird (Julie).
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Justin Dewayne Futch, Eric Lee Rennau, Madison Rae Donaldson (Rak), Mally Williams (Lane), Ella Bird, Justin Williams, and Travis Williams (Melissa).
Her great-grandchildren include Zade Futch, Kendall Rennau, McKinley Donaldson, Mary Williams, Lucille Williams, and Addilee Williams.

She is also survived by extended family members and loved ones who will continue to honor her memory.
A Memorial Service will be held at Cool Springs Baptist Church, 12967 Edenfield Rd. Metter, Georgia 30439 at 4:00 p.m. on June 14, 2026.
