It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Walter Roberts, the heart and soul of our family. Walter passed away at the age of 73, surrounded by family in the early morning hours on July 25, 2026.

Walter was born in Columbia, Missouri, to a simple life with parents Georgia Lee and Ellis Anderson Roberts. He was the youngest sibling of six children. He called Missouri his home until he moved to Georgia in the early 1980s.

Walter was a hardworking man who took pride in providing for his family. Throughout his life, he held different jobs, including work at a rock quarry in Missouri, with GAF in Georgia and as a plumber alongside his son, and later for the City of Metter. He also served in the Navy. No matter the job, he was known for his hard work, strong work ethic, and willingness to help people.

Walter was a devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather. Spending time with his family and those that he loved was when he was happiest. We will all miss the countless memories and unconditional love that he has left us with. He leaves a void that no one else can ever fill.

Walter enjoyed working with his hands, being outdoors, cutting his grass and staying busy. He loved being on the water and hosted more fish fries than anyone could count. Our family created many memories on a boat or around a table. Whether he was gardening, hunting, fishing, woodworking, making wine, or tinkering with lawnmowers and small engines, he was rarely one to sit still. He loved to drive his tractor around the yard, and if someone needed his help with a project, he was often the first one to lend a hand. When he wasn’t outside keeping busy, you could find him riding his buggy on a dirt road. Walter didn’t meet many strangers. He had quick wit and his grandsons will tell you that he talked a lot of smack. Everyone knows that talking smack and picking on you was his personal love language. If he teased you, it meant he cared about you. Once you were a part of his family, you were always a part of his family. He was a simple man in that way and loved his people well. Walter was an ordained minister whose faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation of his life. He loved the Lord deeply and wasn’t afraid to tell you that it was because of Jesus and His grace that he was able to live his life with purpose for his family. Walter loved The Lord so much that he would often come to tears when he’d say the blessing or give thanks to Jesus for his family.

Walter’s greatest pride was his family. Walter leaves behind his bride of 18 years, Annette Roberts; his children, Scotty Roberts (Rocquelle), Christina Walden, Melissa Driggers (Jasper), his ten cherished grandchildren, Heather (Brittany ‘Beewee’), Faith (Kaleb), Kyle ‘KyKy’ (Katie), Nicholas ‘Nic Nic’ (Maranda), Lindsey, Savanna (Kenny), Dylan (Lucy), Kyle, Daniel (Aimiee) and April; and his fourteen adored great-grandchildren. While Walter loved his entire family deeply, there was something about those great grandbabies that softened his heart. They brought out his gentlest side and filled his heart with joy.

Walter is preceded in death by his mother, Georgia Lee Wright, his father, Ellise Anderson Roberts, five siblings, Bobby Roberts, Selma Lou Malone, Phylis Hixenbaugh, Wanda Winn, and Patricia Holmes, and several other family members who he has missed since they have gone on before him.

The family will receive visitors at Wood Funeral Home in Metter, Georgia, on Thursday evening, July 30 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., 800 SW Broad. Metter, Georgia

Walter’s celebration of life will be held on Friday, July 31 11:00 a.m., at his church home, Salem Baptist Church. Graveside services will be at Lake Cemetery on Highway 46 in Metter, Georgia, following his service. Salem Baptist Church is located at 2100 Salem Church Rd. Metter, Georgia.

Walter lived his life pointing others toward Christ, and he finished his journey with the same faith that carried him through his final steps. Although our hearts grieve his absence, we find peace knowing he is finally home with his Savior.
