On February 11, 2023, after a two-year battle with cancer, Christy Diane Chastain Green won her race and stepped into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was surrounded by friends and family in her home that day and will be remembered by all who knew her as a humble and faithful Christian lady who had a heart for serving others. Although she lived for only 49 years, Christy was much more than a cancer patient.
Christy was born in Elbert County, Georgia, on June 10, 1973. It was there that she began her lifelong journey with Jesus Christ. When she was 12 years old, she moved to Stillmore, Georgia, with her mother and brother. There she became an active member of her local Baptist church, where she would later serve as a Sunday School and VBS teacher as well as work alongside her husband directing the youth. After she graduated from Emanuel County Institute in 1991, she attended Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia. During her first year of college, Christy accepted a marriage proposal and transferred to Georgia Southern University. While studying at GSU, she and Kenny Green were married. She raised her three children and entered into the ministry of a pastor’s wife. She received her Associate of Applied Technology Degree in Early Childhood Care and Education from the Heart of Georgia Technical College in 2003 and worked as the library paraprofessional in East Laurens Elementary School. After the birth of her third child, she completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education at Georgia Southern University in the spring of 2008. That fall she accepted a teaching position with the Emanuel County BOE, where she taught until her medical retirement in August 2022.
Before she graduated from high school, Christy was advised to pursue an occupation in the local textile industry. However, Christy chose to earn two degrees in education. Due to her various difficulties, Christy became an advocate for the children to whom she so closely related - the ones who struggled. Those who knew her heart knew that she was a tenacious supporter of the idea that no matter the difficulty of the task ahead, a person can accomplish all things through Christ Jesus.
She was preceded in death by her father David Oleander Chastain of Hart County, Georgia.
Surviving are her husband of 30 years, James Kenneth Green; her daughters, Samantha Nicole Green and Morgan Olivia-Grace Green all of Stillmore; her son, Staff Sergeant James Christian Green, and his wife, Jennifer Giacomello Green, of Aviano, Italy; her mother and stepfather, Phyllis Marie Beasley and Bobby Beasley of Stillmore; her brother, David Paul Chastain of Royston; her stepsister, Alicia Boyett of Stillmore; stepbrother, Bobby Lee Beasley, Jr. “Bubba” of Swainsboro; her father-in-law, Tommy Green and mother-in-law, Sue Green of Stillmore; and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at 2 o’clock at Brewton Baptist Church (475 Peachtree Road, East Dublin 31027) in Laurens County. In lieu of flowers we ask that you consider a donation to Morgan’s collegiate future.
