Mr. Raymond Classens, 85, of Metter died on Friday Sept. 18, 2015 at Ogeechee Area Hospice in
Statesboro. He was born on May 12, 1930 in Daytona Beach, Fl. He was a Marine veteran
of the Korean Conflict, having been awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in the war.
He was a member of Agape Mission where he served as clerk. He was a radio personality
with a career that span for fifty years. Beginning in 1958 he served the following radio stations,
WAPE Jacksonville, FL., WPAP, Fernandina, Bch., FL ,WCLA Claxton, WWNS Statesboro,
WPTB Statesboro, WYLV Sylvania, WWUF Waycross, WHKN Millen and Georgia Eagle
Radio in Statesboro. During the late sixties he was involved in professional wrestling,
having wrestled under the name of “ MR. WRESTLING”. He was preceded in death by his
parents Frank and Eva Classens and his bio-logical mother, Cathrine Walden and a daughter Tara M. Harrod. He is survived by his wife, Varnell Classens of Metter. Sons, Michael of Statesboro, Frank ( Tammy) Classens of Columbia, MO. and John ( Belinda) Classens of Statesboro. Daughters, April ( Michael) Thornhill of La Faytte, Deborah Carey of Rome, Anne Classens Horn of Bloomingdale and Ellen C. ( James) Jones of Helton Head Island. Numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11am. in the chapel of Wood Funeral Home with Rev.
Gene Hiers officiating. Burial will be Noon Day Cemetery in Emanuel County. Visitation will be on Sunday from 5-7pm. at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be,Tommy Palmer, Nate Hirsch, Jerry “ J” Braswell, Gary Holland, Lyndy Brannan and Steve Lawson. Honorary pallbearers will be, Vincent
Garrett, Mike Mull, Rick Pittman Jr., Gus “ Buddy” Horne, Trey Dixion and Cornell Burgess
